3 FREE BIO LINK OPTIONS for your SoCIaL MeDIa

Problem: your social media profiles give you only ONE url link to share...

You have a lot going on! You’re trying to grow your Instagram and Facebook accounts. You have a website and blog, and it’s monetized so you need people to go there!  You also have a lead magnet and landing page that is helping you grow your email list. And you know that the people that click on your profile and link are not all going to be interested in that one thing. Everyone has preferences, everyone has specific things that interest them. Chances of your ONE URL LINK providing what appeals to those that click on it are slim.

HOW DO YOU STRATEGICALLY APPEAL TO MORE PEOPLE THAT CLICK ON YOUR PROFILE AND LINK? Use a Bio Link!

Bio link: solution to a problem you may not know you have!

Bio link, link in bio, micro-landing page, linktree, linktree alternative… all terms for this one fantastic solution. It’s a solution to a problem you may not know you have!

Most of your social media profiles give you the ability to include one URL. You can put your website link, a link to another social media account, a link to a landing page or a product you sell. And if you’re trying to grow your email list, you may be using that space for your email sign-up form.

But MOST small businesses, solopreneurs, independent contractors and entrepreneurs have MULTIPLE streams of income and/or have more than one element of their business they want to promote.

A BIO LINK is a URL link that lists what YOU want to promote! It gives you the ability to add the book you’re promoting, your email sign-up form, links to your other social media accounts and your website. It’s a “LINK TREE” or “MICRO-LANDING PAGE” that includes multiple links to whatever you want. With a bio link you are no longer limited to just one link!

I tried 3 free bio link options to create my own branded, free biolink. Here are the 3 options i tested:

I tried three ways to create a free bio link. I am, afterall, a bootstrapping marketing kinda entrepreneur so “free” is always the first option. If these didn’t work I would have resorted to a paid version. There are also many monthly subscription options available.

I had FOUR GOALS when trying to create an effective branded biolink:

  1. free
  2. my brand (not theirs)
  3. as many links as I wanted
  4. easy to keep updated

Here are the three options I tested:

  • App (Linktree app, free version)
  • Canva
  • WordPress

Here’s a little more information on each option. And I’m adding a video below of how I tested and tried to create bio links in these three options. Ultimately, I ended up keeping one of these three because it fit all four of my goals plus some added benefits (hint: wordpress)!  Keep reading to see a quick demo of how to create a bio and which one I ended up happiest with…

free bio link option #1: Free apps!

Here are 3 free popular APPS... and there's tons more!

Bio links aren’t new, but they are just now gaining in real popularity. This means a ton of new coders have created tons and tons of free, paid and subscription based bio-link options.

Here are more bio link options with free versions. *Keep in mind, “FREE” means you’ll see THEIR branding (not yours) and the templates they provide are limited. But if you aren’t using a bio link at all right now… a FREE limited bio link is way better than none at all!  Create one and get it up on your social media account profiles today!

free bio link option #2: Canva!

Yep, Canva offers bio link templates too!

Canva is an incredibly popular online graphic design app that has a robust free option. So needless to say, it’s quite possibly the most popular app on the planet (well, we think it should be   🙂

Canva has templates for nearly anything you can think of. And yes, it even offers biolink templates AND the ability to upload them as a micro landing page (ie has it’s own URL so you can copy and paste the link where you want). The drawback is that you do need a subscription to canva to get that link. BUT the current subscription rate is so low… most people that would want a bio link are probably already subscribed

free bio link option #3: WordPress!

Got a WordPress Website? Create your Bio Link there!!!!!

About a year ago I finally made the switch from a semi-already-made website subscription platform to wordpress. It was a learning curve that took a few months to overcome. But once I got the hang of it the whole world opened up!  Okay not literally, but the difference between what they allow you to do (semi-already-made website sub platforms like weebly, wix etc) and wordpress is nearly limitless.

You own your wordpress site. You can do nearly anything you’d like on it. And it will be YOUR website name in the link, and YOUR BRANDING!

Create your bio link as a page! It’s the PERFECT solution. You have a branded bio link URL that you paste into everything you want. Then, when you want to update your bio link or make any changes, you have just ONE step… fix it on your wp site. No extra steps like having to log into another app, making the (limited) changes they allow then copying and pasting that new URL into all the places where you want the new version.

PRO TIP: Create the bio link in sections.
1- header
2- button 1 (with a link)
3- button 2 (with a link)
4- button 3 (with a link)

and so on. Add links to videos, blog posts, photos, a gallery… the possibilities are nearly endless! You can even embed a video right on your bio link so no one even needs to click on a link!

I created a video on these bio link options as I was working through them. Keep reading for a little more information and the video below:

Some limitations I ran into when testing these 3 free biolink options included:

  • limited amount of spaces for my links/promos
  • limited colors/backgrounds/templates
  • their branding, not mine
  • crazy long url link… gotta use a url shortener
  • lots of steps to keep it updated with new changes

While running into these limitations when building a free biolink, it’s important to remember these options are still FREE! So IF you can add the most important things to your biolink, do it right now. Here are 9 things you may want to add to YOUR biolink:

9 things to add to your bio link:
